  RECYCLED TIMBER & TIMBER FLOORING
  Ecology : Index

When Barry Donchi started collecting reclaimed and recycled timber 25 years ago to build a house, he never thought that one day he would be makin a good living out of it.

Today Nullarbor Forest Timber Industries is a booming business that caterers for a wide spectrum of customers from do it yourself builders and furniture makers, to the top of the line architects.

Pioneering the reclaimed and recycled timber industry in Austalia, Barry thought that Nullarbor Forest Timber Industries would be an appropriate name as "nullus arbor", means "NO TREES" in Latin.

Nullarbor Forest Timber Industries buy and sell timber that is either recycled or reclaimed.

Much of the recycled timber has been salvaged from demolished wool stores, shearing sheds, wharfs, bridges and buildings. The timber is then taken to the factory in Moama, N.S.W where it is re-milled into dressed timber or deloused for further use as featured structural timber. Timber can also be sold "as is".

Most of the reclaimed timber (Red Gum Slabs) originates from farms across Australia. Many have been chainsaw - milled from huge old Red Gums that had been ring-barked during the 1930's depression and left to rot. These timbers are anything up to 200 years old, and can 4.5m high and 1.2m wide.

With a growing awareness in environmentally friendly products, Barry has a strong belief for value adding timber products and minimizing timber waste.

Another important factor for buyers of reclaimed and recycled timbers of often its history. Much of the timber in their yard is up to 150 years old and comes with amazing character and patina, which can not be matched by new plantation products.

"There is timber in our yard that was pit sawn from convict labor and at least half of what I have was hand hewn. Stop looking at pictures of the Darling Harbour wharves built in Sydney in the 1840's - come and see the real thing. Nowhere else in the world is there such a selection of timber this rare and seasoned." Commented Barry.
