FLY FORBO 2008 – WINNERS ANNOUNCED
APN June/July 2008

Innovative use of eco-friendly Forbo Marmoleum – applied vertically on gallery balustrades to create a monolithic effect – has seen John Wardle Architects and Wilson Architects, architects in association, win the 2008 Fly Forbo Award for the Queensland Brain Institute research facility.

“The building’s four-storey atrium, effectively a theatre for research, is symbolic of the open, fertile exchange of ideas encouraged through the building complex,” says John Wardle, principal at John Wardle Architects.

“Our main objective was for an eco-friendly product that would enhance the void with a robust yet seamless appearance. Marmoleum meets this requirement and, in addition, brings low maintenance and longevity with its unique Topshield finish. The chosen colour, Papyrus White 3049, lends a visual warmth and complements the internal–external finishes palette.”

From the host of entries this year, the judges have also highly commended two other projects.

The judges commended Wolveridge Architects, Melbourne, for a lush and evocative blending of Marmoleum Croc and Walton with rugged horizontal recycled timbered walls at the United Tannery and Boot Factory; and Spowers, Melbourne, for its innovative Williamstown High School project that features bright Marmoleum splashes to help orient users and offset other finishes.

“Its so satisfying and stimulating to see the many creative and beautiful uses of our products pouring in through the entries,” says Wayne Donovan, managing director of Forbo Flooring Systems in Australia.

This year’s winner will “Fly Forbo” to Europe and attend the 100% Design exhibition before meeting the award-winning team at Forbo’s design studios in Holland, as well as gaining access to several exceptional architectural projects across Europe.

Forbo is a true one-stop shop for all health care flooring needs, offering a professional consultation service for facility managers, developers and specifiers.
