R-Flor Yellow Tongue®
An interior all-purpose flooring for use in domestic and some residential buildings. Designed for both platform and fitted flooring construction methods. R-Flor Yellow Tongue will support floor live loads as required for houses generally in Australian Standard AS1170.1, SAA Loading Code, Dead and Live Loads and Load Combinations, 19 mm thick to span 450 mm maximum joist centres.
R-Flor Red Tongue®
As for Yellow Tongue but 22 mm thick to span 600 mm maximum joist centres.
R-Flor Blue Tongue® Heavy Duty
A 25 mm thick R-Flor specifically for some residential, commercial, industrial and institutional buildings that are subject to increased floor loads.
As floor loads will depend on use and the nature of occupancy, refer AS1170.1. When used over floor joists at 450 mm maximum centres, 25 mm thick Blue Tongue will support live loads in excess of 10KPa uniformly distributed and 4.0kN concentrated. In some circumstances, alternative fixing methods may be necessary. For information, please contact your Carter Holt Harvey Customer Service Centre on 1300 658 828.
R-Flor is a termite protected particleboard flooring and provides added protection against termite attack. In addition, adequate subfloor ventilation and physical barriers or soil treatments should be provided in accordance with AS2057 and AS1694.
Design Tips
There are a number of design options and good building practices that allow you to build with timber subfloor construction and get the most out of R-Flor:
- Draft Proofing: particularly around windows and doors
- Increasing Insulation: walls to R2.0 and ceilings to R3.5
- Enclosing the timber subfloor: improves the energy performance of the subfloor and reduces the general insulation requirement for suspended floor construction
- Orientation: maximising northern solar access and minimising west and easterly windows
- Windows: Utilise thermally improved windows for some or all windows - This includes the choice of frames used and/or glass type
- Permanent Shading of Windows: especially those facing east or west, and this can be achieved with devices such as blinds, screens and pergolas - Allseasons® outdoor premium grade treated pine is an ideal building material
- Under-floor Insulation: further minimises heat loss through the floor - R-Flor Plus and R-Flor Max systems have been developed for demanding applications.
Practical Advice
The platform construction method is used extensively in the construction of subfloors. If insulation is to be installed at the time of constructing the platform floor (or at a later stage), appropriate precautions need to be taken to avoid water/moisture entrapment in the cavity space between underside of flooring and insulation material or trapped within the insulating material itself.
Moisture entrapment may result in:
- Particleboard flooring expansion due to hygroscopic movement; or
- Conditions that support the growth of mould, fungi and timber deterioration
When supplementary subfloor thermal insulation is used (with R-Flor or general purpose particleboard flooring); install insulation in accordance with manufacturer instructions. Also ensure that the insulation itself is suitable for subfloor applications and that the product can be installed in a manner consistent with requirements of AS1860.2. |
